The Group of Building Environmental Research, (GRBES), operates under the frame of the Section of Applied Physics, Department of Physics of the University of Athens. It carries out specific research and development programs on the field of environmental quality of the built environment. In parallel, offers education and training to under and post graduate students, and prepares educational material and books on the field of energy and environment. It works on topics related to: development of Intelligent Materials, Energy Performance of Buildings, Solar Energy Systems and Techniques, Energy Efficient Technologies, Indoor Environmental Quality, IT Technologies applied to Buildings, Urban Environmental Quality, Energy and Environmental Rating. The Group is equipped with all the necessary infrastructure to perform experimental studies on the field of environmental quality of the build environment. GRBES is working on specific International projects aiming to apply and demonstrate energy efficient technologies. Simulation techniques are used to optimise the efficiency of the energy systems while the finalized projects are monitored in detailed to experimentally assess their energy and environmental performance. Italy

Within the Energy Department of Politecnico di Milano, the end use Efficiency Research Group (eERG), is dedicated to research, technology transfer and teaching about the efficient use of energy in buildings. In particular in the areas of: low energy buildings, passive cooling techniques - night ventilation, ground coupling, etc. -, efficient lighting and daylighting; technical and economic analysis of energy-using products; evaluation and certification of energy savings in the context of liberalized energy markets.

Past and ongoing work of eERG include: research via experimental test facilities and computer simulation on advanced glazing, shading, and ground exchangers for heating and cooling; building simulation to identify retrofit saving potentials with special focus on passive summer comfort; energy analysis to support the integrated design of advanced low energy buildings; large in field measurement campaigns to assess comfort levels in buildings (ASHRAE class I measurements and subjective surveys in commercial buildings).

Sweden

KanEnergi was established in 1997 and has since than worked with management, technology and strategy development and implementation of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in buildings, industry, public operations and transports.

On national and regional/local level KanEnergi is working with technology development and management and strategy development in relation to renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Slovenia

Building and Civil Engineering Institute ZRMK focuses on all fields concerning buildings and civil engineering, including energy efficiency, new technologies and materials. Its most important clients include Slovenian ministries, governmental Agency of Efficient Use of Energy, municipalities, as well as individual private and public clients facing energy related problems in buildings. ZRMK has been involved in various international and national other projects concerning thermal performance, energy efficiency of buildings and households, and sustainability issues:

  • development of methodology and pilot scheme for energy certification / labeling of buildings,
  • organization of energy advisory network ENSVET for private households on RUE and RES,
  • methodology and execution of energy audits in public and apartment buildings,

Slovakia

Slovak Innovation and Energy Agency (SIEA) carries the information service for the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic, with special focus on the energy sector. It gathers processes and disseminates information related to the increase of energy efficiency, using of renewable energy sources, combined heat and power and the development of innovation activities. Outcomes of SIEA work are useful mainly for decision makers, increase use of local energy resources and efficient use of energy. It contributes to increase of the skill level of employees in the energy sector, helps to reduce the financial costs of energy consumption for final consumers and in this way helps to increase the competitiveness of the Slovak economy. In fulfilling its tasks SIEA mainly cooperates with universities, research and development institutions, organizations operating in the area of technical standardization and testing, Ministries, Regulatory office for network industries, State energy inspection, Municipalities and Upper territorial districts, non-governmental organizations as well as energy agencies abroad (IEA, EnR, etc.).

SIEA has a long-lasting experience in the implementation of international projects within various EU community programs (Intelligent energy – Europe, INTERREG IVC, 7FP). National Energy Conservation Agency (NAPE) was established in 1994 as an initiative of the Energy Conservation Foundation (FPE). The Agency was created with an aim of popularizing efficient and rational energy usage, above all in the building sector, and the principles of sustainable development.
